O My America: Why Is There No Palestinian State on the West Bank?

by Lawrence Bush netanyahuWhy is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Hamas is lofting missiles, yes, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? A country has the right to defend itself, of course, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Israel needs to control its borders, yes, including those smuggling tunnels, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Those three settler boys got kidnapped and murdered in Gush Etzion, yes, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? They’ve always hated us, sure, sure, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Hitler killed us, and the Grand Mufti cheered him on, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? If there were no wall, they might still be blowing up buses, but Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Gaza, now? Gaza is not the question. Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? What’s that? “There cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan.” Huh? Since when? Until last week, you were on record supporting a two-state solution. Hamas has been a security danger since long before last week. What’s changed — apart from 220 Palestinians dead, and one Israeli Jew? Why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Why have you doubled funding for settlements this year? Why are you sitting in a Cabinet full of far-right ideologues instead of a unity government that could bring the country to peace? Why did you refuse even to discuss the boundaries of a Palestinian state with Kerry and Abbas, while you kept moving the boundaries of discussion to include new language about Palestinians recognizing the JEWISH state? It ain’t MY idea of a Jewish state, I’ll tell you that. And meanwhile, why is there no Palestinian state on the West Bank? Lawrence Bush is the editor and publisher of Jewish Currents.

I’m Arielle Angel, editor-at-large of Jewish Currents. Before you go, there’s something I need to ask.

We’ve seen over and over how the mainstream media falters in telling stories on our beats—whether it’s antisemitism, Israel/Palestine in American politics, Jewish identity, or the American left. At Jewish Currents we’re committed to uncompromising analysis and longform reporting on these issues and more—stories you won’t find anywhere else. In a media landscape that obscures injustice and flattens discussion, we’re changing the conversation. But we need you.
