This volume contains a new history of what scholar Devin E. Naar has termed the “Ladino Left,” the loose collection of Ottoman-born radicals active in New York City in the early 20th century. It also features a six-song excerpt from a 1919 Ladino Socialist Songbook. In honor of this publication, Jewish Currents has commissioned new recordings of two songs from the songbook: “La Internasional,” performed and recorded in Brooklyn by a group led by Daniel Elias and Simone Salmon, and “El Imno Sosialista,” performed and recorded in Los Angeles by Lu Coy, who also composed an original melody.
