We're having a Hanukkah party!

Join Jewish Currents and Black Ox Orkestar for a night of music and celebration!

If you’re in New York City, please join us at Union Pool on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 7:00 pm onward. This party is open to all, and to attend the Black Ox Orkestar concert you can PURCHASE TICKETS HERE. There will be a live DJ following the concert to keep the party going.

We’ll have a new special edition hand-screened poster, copies of the Black Ox Orkestar “Mizrakh Mi Ma’arav” flexi 7” vinyl, Jewish Currents merch, and some special surprises on hand. So if you’re still looking for Hanukkah gifts, you’ll have an array of great choices. Please mark your calendar and get into the holiday season with us!

Union Pool is a wheelchair-accessible venue. For questions about accommodation and accessibility, please email events@jewishcurrents.org.

PS. If you’ve still got dancing energy after our party ends, our friends at Flaminggg are hosting a queer hanukkah party that will be going all night long! Check out more information about Gelty & Gorgeous here.

More information on Black Ox Orkestar:

Following a 15-year hiatus, the four musicians of Black Ox Orkestar reunited in the pandemic summer of 2020, impelled by an invitation by Jewish Currents to be the subject of a feature article introducing this groundbreaking band to a new generation of listeners. The Black Ox Orkestar reconvened at first in friendship and conversation, which soon evolved into a desire to tap back into the musical chemistry they’d each dearly missed.

One of their earliest new recordings, “Mizrakh Mi Ma’arav”, was released as a flexi 7” by Jewish Current as a gift to its subscribers in February 2022, effectively announcing the return of Black Ox Orkestar. The song also appears on the band’s new full-length album Everything Returns, which picks up right where they left off a decade-and-a-half ago: an entrancing collection of roiling interpretations of Jewish diasporic instrumentals combined with brooding vocal-driven originals (sung primarily in Yiddish) showcasing their unique sound and sensibility—offering a distinctive take and timbre within the contemporary landscape of Jewish, Yiddish and klezmer music.

Everything Returns was released by Constellation on December 2nd, 2022, and will be available for purchase at the concert.
