Jews in the 112th Congress

by Lawrence Bush

As the 112th Congress convenes, we’re publishing this list of Jewish senators (13) and representatives (27), based on research by Alyssa Goldstein, our magazine’s intern at Bard College. The list includes their top five campaign contributors, the industries or interest groups that fund them most (this financial information comes courtesy of the Center for Responsive Politics), and their committee posts.

Why single out Jews in the Congress? Doing so may make some readers nervous about inviting anti-Semitism down on our community’s heads, or annoyed by the implication that Jews should be especially interested in Jews (or that Jews in positions of influence are pushed in one direction or another by their Jewish identities), or wrestling with definitional issues about whether Jews constitute a religious group (as defined by the U.S. Census) or a national minority (as defined in the old socialist bloc) or a nation (as defined by the Zionist movement) or a people/civilization (as defined by the Reconstructionist movement, among others) — or all of the above. Of course, a listing of African-Americans in Congress, or of women in Congress, or of gay men or lesbians in Congress, would probably be of great interest to our readers and provoke little ambivalence. Perhaps the difference in reaction indicates something significant about the nature of Jewish oppression: that in the modern world, we are afraid less of  powerlessness than of being perceived as having undue power. That is the anti-Semitism that was shaped and implemented by the Nazis, and it weighs heavily on Jewish heads today.

In any event, JC is a Jewish magazine, and we see it as a legitimate part of our work to report on the doings of Jews in Congress. One observation to make that brings us pride (or, for some of us, surprise): With the exception of Eric Cantor, the Republican majority whip in the House, all of the Jews in Congress are Democrats or independents, and the great majority are liberal. Despite the common misapprehension, especially among Jewish leftists, that the Jewish community is  conservative — a perception shaped mostly by highly visible, conservative Jewish activism regarding Israel — the reality of tenacious Jewish liberalism is revealed here.

    • Because supporting the Israeli government’s policies, or the preferred policies of AIPAC, is not necessarily “pro-Israel,” that is, good for the future of Israel. “Pro-Israel” tends to be a euphemism for conservativism regarding occupation, settlements, etc.

  1. Where is the moral outrage from these Jewish legislators regarding Israel, UN Bias, the anti-Semitism growing in this country (especially in California) and around the world, the anti-circumcision bill in San Francisco, etc.? Where is their public outcry against this new/old Nazism here and in Egypt and the rest of the Middle East? Where is their public support for Israel, their condemnation of Arab calls for Israel’s annihilation, their concerns about America being the great Satan? When will they learn to stand up for religious freedom? When will they dissuade Obama from his pro-Muslim/anti-Israel stand? Doesn’t seem to be a big deal that there are Jewish members of Congress unless they fight for justice and against the enemies of the Jews.

  2. I wanted to see what the exact statistics were on Jews in Congress. I am a student at a large state university and also tutor writing , history and political science. This past semester I tutored a number of Arab students from the Middle East on American History. One of my students told me that Congress was 70% Jewish! I told him that that was not true but I did not know the numbers. This kind of thing makes you wonder what other whoppers are out there being passed off as fact and how much of the problems the West has with the Islamic World are due to conscious lies like this!

  3. Obama plans to veto palistinian bid for a state, he is sooo anti Israel.

And even if he wasnt, befriending muslims or supporting a palistinian state isnt anti israel.

Dont forget a ton of Israelis want them to have a state as well.

Saying he is anti israel for disagreeing with you is like saying democrat leaning foriegn states are anti american because they tend to disagree with republicans.

OR saying because you were against the iraqi war, you are anti american and pro islam.

It just doesnt make any sense. And even then, it just isnt true.

  4. Thank u for letting me know who to not trust in Congress, I wonder how long before u con the American ppl into a war with Iran. We know about council 13 we know about everything how can such a small population control so much, you are a historically evil people but your day of judgment will come

  5. thanks muhammad i am a caucasian american and we are waking up to this zionist takeover soon we will route these people from our government, treasonous scum, we must end the “special relationship” with israel , i dont care what country they are from why is israel and its citizens the only country members of our government are allowed to hold dual citizenship with? we know what happens to people who do not go along with the jewish zionist agenda, people like cynthia mc kinney who exposed and spoke out against members of congress being forced to swear loyalty to israel over the US, we know who is responsible for 9-11, phony jew zionists, ashkenazi kazars , euro jews who are not even real jews ,going about calling everyone anti semite when they are not even semite themselves and hating true jewish semites such as sephardic jews , they will be hung for treason soon, racist zionist scumm that they are

  6. Rev. George Brooks - Reply

Jews, both here in the United States and Israel, are an evil people, as one blogger has already said. They have, in fact, always been this way, with even Jesus, himself a Jew, referred to all or many of them in John 8:44 as being of their father, the devil. And my group is now (March 2012) preparing to launch a movement to call for divestment and sanctions on Israel for their mistreatment of not only the Palestinians, but even the Ethiopian Jews and Christians in Israel. And as a minister I know for a fact that much in the BIble they Jews wrote are lies, which I speak to, but other preachers will not. — Rev. George Brooks

    • Rev. George Brooks, you are out of touch with the religion you profess to believe in and are a dangerous vulgar person for expressing your anti-Jewish sentiment this way. You’re not a Christian but CINO — Christian In Name Only and your bigotry against an entire group of people is utterly un-American.

  7. The U.S. needs to wake up to the Jewish cabal of Zionists now! The Jews that say they are Jews, but are NOT! The Fed Reserve has got to go. The Money Lenders that Jesus threw out of the temple so enraged Him that he took a whip to them! We need to do the same for they have destroyed the economy of the world and will not satisfy their lust for money till they control all the world’s banks (thus the future wars to take over those countries not yet controlled by the World Bank of Rothschilds!)

  8. All_Against_Israel - Reply

To hel* with Israel, the illegal entity, established on the ruins of others. To hel* with the murdering, treasonous AIPAC, whose agenda is the destruction of the US of A. It is about time we lined up the elected officials and asked them to choose between a foreign enemy (Israel) or the USA.
How much longer will we support a murdering terrorist state called Israel. Wasn’t it Israel that killed our Navy Sailors on the USS Liberty? Wasn’t Israel (Jonathan Pollard) who spied on us and caused our security lots of harm. Wasn’t the Mossad who were caught operatin in NYC right after the 911 attacks? Who spies on their friends? none, you only spy on your enemies. We are Israel’s enemy and she is ours

Cut the aid to this parasite! Expel its diplomats, they belong in prisons not in embassies! improve relations with the Arabs/Moslems, who we need for trade.

  9. To Bostonblah. the reverend George Brooks, Muhammed, Nighthawk and the thousands of other crazies out there with little education, social exposure and sanity. History has made it very clear that antisemites are total madmen/women who use their hatred to promote their own power, and more often than not get buried in their own sick doings. Take Hitler, Stalin, Queen Isabella and the nut who shot Gabby Giffords because she was Jewish, to name just 4. You can rant and rave all you like but you are all idiots and can’t have a conversation that makes any sense at all. Understand this: The Palestinians were given many opportunities to create a state but were afraid their leaders would be immediately assassinated if they did so. As long as there is an Israel, Muhammed, Moslems will continue to use her as an excuse for their own inability to achieve anything like smart economics and progress and will simply continue to kill each other time after time. Who the hell are you to talk about the Jews?

    • You are talking about a serious conversation. Palestinians have been oppressed and Israel has been blocking everything they can in the UN. Israel uses false flags to attack their neighbors and start wars in other countries. The Palestinians were afraid their leaders would get assassinated and they did, Yassar Arafat was poisoned by Israel. You support genocide.

  10. The fact that the number of Jews in Congress is four times as large as their share of the population is not by far as important as the fact that many non-Jewish senators and congressmen, especially the younger ones and the newly arrived, have been launched in their careers and are still helped by the Jewish lobby, and are consequently controlled by it. In my position as a foreign correspondent for daily newspapers in the United States I have experienced personally the remarkable, capillar power of the lobby. And if it were not for it, how could a young new senator such as Ted Cruz, attack Chuck Hagel’s nomination in the Senate while holding up a banner accusing Hagel of having “tilted too far toward Israel in the Middle East process”. What? is that not uncontrovertibly true? Is that not a statement that should be freely made by anybody in the United States Congress? The neo-cons – 90% Jewish – have already started their nominal fatherland toward ruin in their push to benefit Israel. These neo-neo-cons promise to complete the job.

  11. Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am appalled at the number of comments here that spout hatred against Jews while at the same time professing a belief in Jesus Christ. Christianity is not about hatred, revenge or even silence in the face of others suffering but about love for God and all men, regardless of their beliefs, understanding that we are all on the same “side” in the necessity to struggle against our real enemies: ourselves, the world and the devil. Practicing Orthodox Christians believe that our goal is to unite with God; however, our God is only possible to approach if we love our neighbor–regardless of whether he loves us–for this is how we will be judged (Matt 25:35-45). Indeed, according to St Silouan the Athonite, the entire New Testament can be summarized by the command: “love your enemies”.

Indeed, for Orthodox Christians our feelings about Jews are a mixture of brotherly love and pity. Brotherly love because Judaism is the root of the tree to which we are now branches; pity, because we wish for Jews and all human beings to share in the joy we know of the Resurrected Christ. For the Christian, we aim to shed tears for those who hate Christ–not guns, fiery tongues or evil wishes. Of course, that is an extremely difficult task, perfected only by Christ Himself and that is why we aim to “take up our cross(es) and follow [Him]“. Forgive us, Jewish brothers and sisters when we fall short of this aim. Nonetheless, it is our aim.

For non-Jews, let me remind you that in all the world, among all peoples, God originally chose the Jews because of their virtue and fidelity to Him. While the Indians awaited Brahman, the Greeks, pagan wisdom, the Buddhists enlightenment and the Zoroastrian’s holy fire, the Jews found the one God of power. Indeed, their scriptures as well as those of almost every ancient people testifies to His demonstration of this power through them. Thus, I think it is a great mistake to label the Jews as “evil” or as “devils” and to aim criticism of them (on religious grounds) outside the context within which we, as Christians, understand Christ’s words and to whom he was speaking–to the Jewish leaders, then and now, who misled and continue to mislead the people, for their own selfish ends that involve anything but love. That leadership may or may not be related to the ones in Congress, I do not know.

What I do know is that it is unlikely that hateful discourse about Jews trying to dominate the world, especially on a Jewish-readership-based site, will win converts to the cause of all men and women seeing that we are on the same side. To be sure, I found this article because I was concerned that so many Jewish Congressmen (Feinstein, Boxter, Schumer, Cantor, Frank, among others) seemed to be involved in legislation that further protracts the rights of Americans and seeks to make our government more oppressive–something Jews should be more than fearful of. I was not concerned because I feel there is a Jewish conspiracy but because I understand that there is a Jewish lobby and I wonder how aware that lobby could be of how the aggressive steps of the last several administrations (and the congressman involved) are serving to undermine the America that many of them and their parents immigrated to and helped to build. I am also concerned that justification for this legislation (gun control, genome research, abortion, etc.) it is becoming part of accepted Jewish discourse and, as a Christian, possibly further preventing them from seeing how such measures move us further and further away from our intended (by our beliefs, at least) purpose.

Sincerely and genuinely, my love and well wishes to you all!

  12. A potentially useful list. There were comments pro and con about the number of Jews in Congress. The number of actual Jews is irrelevant as long as Jews are funding the Democratic party.
