February 16: Anne Frank’s Sister

by Lawrence Bush on February 15, 2011

Anne Frank’s elder sister, Margot Betti Frank, was born on this date in 1926 in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. It was Margot’s deportation order that drove the family into hiding in the attic of her father’s office building on July 6, 1942. They remained there for two years until they were betrayed to the Gestapo by someone who has never been identified. Margot Frank was involved with a Dutch Zionist club and had ambitions to be a midwife. She died in Bergen-Belsen of typhus several days before her sister. According to Anne, Margot was a diary writer as well, but no trace of her diary has been found.

“[D]ear Margot is ever so perfect, graceful, beautiful and smart . . .” —Anne Frank
